Aspect Ratio Basics: 16:9, 4:3, 9:16

Aspect ratio describes shape; resolution describes pixel count. 16:9 can be 1280x720, 1920x1080 or 3840x2160; 9:16 is vertical. Fitting 16:9 footage into 9:16 crops or adds bars; it does not magically become vertical.

16:9: YouTube/web/TV.

9:16: TikTok/Reels/Shorts.

4:3: older slides/photos.

1:1: avatars/product shots.

Crop: fills the frame but loses edges.

Pillarbox/letterbox: keeps everything but adds bars.

Reshoot/re-layout: vertical content is best captured natively.
